Odense University Rowing

Odense University Rowing (OUR)

Become part of a strong community, and enjoy unique experiences, while also becoming stronger at the same time.

In university rowing, we compete in a 8+ boat, where we train towards participating in both outdoor- and indoor competitions called regattas.

8+ is a type of outrigger rowboat that contains 8 rowers as well as a cox who gives commands when being on the water.

Odense University Rowing both competes on behalf of the University College Lillebælt (UCL) as well as the University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

In addition to all the training sessions and competitions, we host some legendary parties, dining-, and other social events together with our supporters and former university rowers.

Where and how does it work?

Our daily training takes place at Odense Roklub (at Kanalvej 160, 5000 Odense C) near Odense Harbor.

During the summer period, we mostly train on the water in either 2, 4, or 8+ types of rowboats. And during the winter period, we work out in a strength training room as well as on ergometers, where we both get to improve our technique as well as our physical fitness and strength.

The summer period with outdoor training begins on the 1st of April and ends on the 1st of November. The winter period, with indoor training, lasts from the 1st of November to the 1st of April.

When being a member of Odense Roklub, you have free access to the facilities at the club.

Who can row?

Rowing is a sport for everyone!

Everyone is welcome, regardless of if you are an experienced rower or if you have never been on a rowboat or ergometer before.

Odense University Rowing aims at students from UCL and SDU aged 18–30, but EVERYONE can participate in the training sessions. There are no requirements for physical results or admission tests.

If you are a reliable teammate, you are a perfect fit! If you are not, you will become very quickly.

“There are no other options; the team means everything in university rowing, and you are never alone, regardless of level”.

Nonetheless, before being able to go out in a boat, it is required of you to have a signed swimming certificate. These are very easily achieved and are free to get. If you don't have a certificate, we can recommend using SDU's indoor swimming pool or the harbor bath in Odense, both of which are free to use.

When do we train?

Four times a week, we train towards participating in regattas and other competitions throughout the year.

Time of training sessions:

Mondays and Wednesdays 17.00-18.30  Fridays kl. 05.40-07.15

After the training sessions in the morning on Fridays, it is always possible to be on SDU or UCL at 08:15.

How much does it cost?

The membership fee is the same for all active members at Odense Roklub. The monthly cost is around DKK 230.

Historical background

Modern rowing, including University Rowing, is one of the oldest and most traditional sports worldwide. University Rowing comes from the universities' desire to compete against each other.

The most famous boat race is at the Thames between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

In Denmark, from 1950–1987 there were annual regattas between the universities. Then in 2013, Aalborg Roklub took the initiative to bring University Rowing back to life after decades of hibernation. Since 2015, there has been University Rowing in Odense.
